Another year over and what an adventure it has been. It has been an absolute delight to watch the children grow, develop and achieve so many amazing things. They have been an absolute pleasure to work with - I am going to miss them all so much. I hope you all have a fabulous summer and I look forward to hearing all about their progress in year 1!
Week beginning 8th July 2019
On Monday we had a brilliant time on our school trip to Tynemouth. First we visited the Blue Reef Aquarium where we enjoyed exploring the sea-life, touching some rock pool creatures, watching a seal show and playing in the park. Then we enjoyed our picnic lunch on the field. After lunch we walked down to the beach and had a play on the sand and and a paddle in the sea! A great day was had by all - we had some very tired children (and grown ups!) on the way home on the bus. Thank you so much to everyone who came with us - your help was invaluable!
Week beginning 1st July 2019
Wow, wow, wow! What a week Gateshead! So very busy but so much fun too. We have enjoyed Sports Day, Stay and Play with our grown ups and lots of fun problem solving maths activities this week. The highlight of our week was, of course, our end of year assembly. Our dress rehearsal on Monday infront of the whole school was amazing but then on Thursday our final performance for our families blew everyones socks off! I was unbelievably proud of every single one of you. You were all absolute superstars and made us all feel very proud. It has been a very 'upside down' week with all of our activities but the children have coped amazingly well and taken everything in their stride. Have a lovely weekend and have a good sleep on Sunday night ready for our trip to Tynemouth on Monday.
Week beginning 24th June 2019
An exciting week for the children as they spent Tuesday morning with their new teacher in their new classroom. All of the children came back in the afternoon full of excitement and enthusiasm about their morning. It was lovely to hear all about their adventures.
This week in maths we have explored number, shape and pattern. We have also continued with our PSHE sessions with Jigsaw Jennie. We talked about our bodies thinking about our five senses and what different parts of our body are used for.
We have also been very busy preparing for our end of year assembly - the children can't wait to share their learning journey with you.
Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the sunshine!
Week beginning 17th June 2019
This week we have been learning a new story using a story map and actions. The story is a rags to riches tale and is called 'Jack and the Robbers'. Next week the children will create their own story based on this one. The children are so good at storytelling now and I can't wait to hear their finished stories.
We also looked at work by the artist Monet. We took inspiration from his 'Waterlilies' piece and used pastel colours and tissue paper to create our own amazing pictures.
A great week from Gateshead class!
Week beginning 10th June 2019
On Monday we enjoyed a visit to Clara Vale. The weather was very kind to us as it was a beautiful day. We enjoyed a spotters walk, pond dipping and bird watching before enjoying our long awaited picnic lunch. In the afternoon we went on a flower identification hunt, a mini beast hunt and then enjoyed a play in the park! We had a wonderful day - thank you to all of the grown ups that came to help us on the trip.
Week beginning 3rd June 2019
Wow! What a busy first week back we have had. On Monday we received a special mission from Supertato - we needed his help to defeat the Evil Pea, who was causing havoc in the supermarket. Each day we were given a superhero mission to complete - these included making super vegetables, creating superhero fact files, drawing our own story maps and exploring the jelly and vegetables in the tuff tray. Luckily we all managed to complete the mission and save the vegetables from the Evil Pea!
We have also introduced the children to our new PHSE scheme of work which we will be using on a weekly basis. It is called 'Jigsaw' and we have a special friend, Jigsaw Jennie, to help us with our Jigsaw jobs. This week the children told Jennie all about their favourite things to do at school and we also created a Jigsaw Charter which we will be using in each session.
A brilliant week Gateshead - I am so proud of all of the hard week you have completed this week - well done!
Week beginning 20th May 2019
This week we have worked on sharing amounts in Maths. The children were fantastic at sharing amounts equally and identifying if an amount had not been shared fairly. We have also enjoyed innovating our stories during our Talk for Writing sessions. The children have thought of some great ideas for their own stories and created a story map to discuss their ideas. We have also been developing our sentence writing skills this week, working towards writing our own independent sentences.
Another great week Gateshead - have a brilliant half term and I'll see you after the holidays.
Week beginning 13th May 2019
What a lovely sunny week it has been. We made the most of the glorious sunshine and spent lots of time outside this week. We have enjoyed gardening, washing the cars at the car wash, building dens and making our own music band! We even had our PE session outside and took part in the sack race, egg and spoon race, sprint and angel race. Let's hope this sunny weather continues so we can have more outdoor fun next week.
Week beginning 6th May 2019
This week we have continued our brilliant gymnastics coaching with Miss Troke from Grassroots. The children have been superstars at taking part in all of the activities. This week we learnt some new rolls - straddle roll, pencil roll, pike roll and forward roll! I was so proud of the determination and perseverance shown by the children - some of the rolls were very tricky but everyone had a good go and used their 'Growth Mindset' to keep on trying. Well done Gateshead - I'm looking forward to next week's session already!
Week beginning 29th April 2019
Another brilliant week in Gateshead Class. We have worked hard in maths this week learning all about subtraction - the children have enjoyed lots of practical activities based around subtraction and they've really impressed me with all of their hard work.
We have also been learning the story 'How Tortoise got his Shell' by using actions and a story map. We have been looking at different birds and shelled animals ready to innovate our own stories next week - I can't wait to see them!
Have a lovely bank holiday weekend and we'll see you all back at school on Tuesday.
Week beginning 23rd April 2019
Welcome back to you all - it was great to see so many happy faces arrive back at school on Tuesday. We have all been sharing news from our Easter holidays and it sounds like everyone has had a great time.
We have had a very busy first week back. In Maths we have been working on addition - the children have enjoyed lots of practical and small group activities based around addition and they have really impressed me with both their counting and number recognition skills.
As the weather was so lovely earlier in the week we helped Mrs Richter with some gardening - digging out weeds, watering the plants and looking after the potatoes.
We have a very busy but fun term planned - it's hard to believe that it's our last term, this year has flown over. Well done Gateshead for a fabulous first week back!
Week beginning 1st April 2019
This week we have taken part in a range of different Easter themed activities - one of our favourite activities was our egg decorating afternoon. We used googly eyes, buttons, material, cotton wool, sequins, wool and feathers to create some fabulous designs. The children's perseverance and hard work really paid off and it proved very difficult to choose the winners for the competition - they were so amazing that everyone received a Creme Egg for their effort.
We then finished off our last week of term by having our marble jar treat afternoon. We each brought a toy or game in which we shared with our friends then we enjoyed a party picnic outside.
The children have all worked so hard this term - I am so proud of each and every one of them. I hope you all have a brilliant Easter break and spend some lovely family time together.
See you all in two weeks Gateshead!
Week beginning 25th March 2019
We have taken full advantage of the wonderful sunshine this week and took part in both PE and Maths lessons outside. In Maths we have been working on one more and one less than a given number - we enjoyed playing Bingo and hopscotch to help us remember. In PE we went onto the big field and played a range of parachute games - our favourite being 'Popcorn' where we had to bounce all of the plastic balls off the parachute as quickly as we could. Some brilliant teamwork helped us to do this super quickly!
Hopefully this lovely weather will continue for our last week of the Spring term - have a lovely weekend.
Week beginning 18th March 2019
On Monday we enjoyed a trip to Clara Vale. We walked down to the village hall where we had a snack before starting our adventures. First, we listened to the story 'Wow said the Owl' then we walked through the woods looking for a range of different objects, including a yellow flower, a shiny leaf, a smelly leaf, something furry, something prickly and something sticky. We then went to the bird hide where we used binoculars to spot different birds - we were lucky enough to spot herons, chaffinches, a blue tit and many more birds. We then headed back to the hall and had our lunch - definitely a trip highlight! After lunch we walked to the nature reserve and helped make a campfire. We looked for sticks and had a try at making sparks using flints. When the fire was hot enough we toasted some marshmallows to eat - they were delicious! Just before our bus came to take us back to school we had a play in the park - it was great fun. Thank you to all of the adults that helped us during the trip - we hope you had as much fun as we did.
Week beginning 11th March 2019
Another brilliant week in Gateshead class. This week we have been learning the story 'The Three Little Pigs' and looking at the story structure, characters and different parts of the story. Next week we will be changing parts of the story and creating own version using a story map. In Maths this week we have been looking at estimation - one of our favourite activities was estimating how many sweets were in the jar.
To finish off our fab week we held our termly 'Stay and Play' session. As storytelling is a big focus in Reception class this year we decided to follow the theme 'Once Upon a Time'. We enjoyed working with our grown ups on a range of different activities linked to storybooks, such as, planting beans, making alien sock puppets, decorating gingerbread men and making paper dolls. We also used the story stones and story dice to tell our grown-ups different stories, they then shared a story book with us to finish off the session. Thank you to everybody that came to join us we hope you had lots of fun!
Week beginning 4th March 2019
We have had a wonderful story themed week in Reception this week. On Tuesday we listened to the story of 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' and made our own delicious pancakes for snack to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. On Wednesday we celebrated 'World Book Day' by dressing up as our favourite book character and talking about who we were and the story we were from. We then danced our socks off at the 'World Book Day' disco after school. On Friday we continued with lots of book related activities linked to the stories The Gruffalo, Oliver's Milkshake, Home and The Paper Bag Princess. What a fun packed week it has been - and lots more planned for next week too! Have a lovely weekend.
Week beginning 25th February 2019
Welcome back to you all - we hope you all had a great half term. The children have came back to school fully refreshed and eager to learn. This week we have enjoyed joining in with our whole school Enrichment Week, 'Emmaville Goes Green'. The aim of the week was to enable the children to find out about environmental and world issues at a level that was relevant to them. These included:
Waste - can we recycle at school and at home?
Transport - can we walk or scoot / bike to school and use the car less?
School Grounds - how can we make our immediate environment better?
Upcycle - can we make use of things that we would normally throw away?
Healthy Living - can we try some new foods and eat snacks that are better for us?
We immersed ourselves in all of these activities and enjoyed making healthy wraps, cycling or scootering around an obstacle course, litter picking, sorting containers into different categories ready to recycle, planting sunflowers, upcycling tyres and plastic bottles and designing our own canvas bags to take to the shops.
When we arrived at school on Friday we were shocked to find a crime scene on our playground. We had the very important task of finding out who had pushed Humpty Dumpty off his wall. We used our problem solving skills to look at the clues and eliminate people from our suspect list - eventually we worked out that the Gingerbread Man was the guilty party! We made 'Wanted' posters to display around school and, at the end of the school day, we received an email to say that the Gingerbread Man had been found thanks to our help!
You have all worked so hard this week - have a lovely weekend and enjoy a well deserved rest.
Week beginning 11th February 2019
For the past three weeks we have been learning the story 'Peter and the Wolf'. We have used a story map and actions to help tell the story, acted out the story using masks and props, described different characters from the story, retold the story using story stones and identified the beginning, middle and end of the story.
We also listened to the music used in the story and took inspiration from this to draw the characters - we also looked at and explored different instruments which are used in the story.
This week we created our own class version of the story. The children then thought of their own warning story and made a story map to retell their story. I was really impressed with some of the imaginative stories which were told!
I hope you all have a lovely half term - it's hard to believe we are already half way through the school year!
Week beginning 4th February 2019
What a fun packed week we have had! We have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about Chinese New Year and fully immersed ourselves in all of our Chinese themed activities. We made the most amazing Chinese dragon, played Chinese music on the steel pans, made lucky red envelopes and cooked delicious Chinese food to take home and share with our grown ups. Although these were all great fun, I think the highlight of the week was our trip to the theatre on Thursday. We went to the Northern Stage in Newcastle to watch the performance of 'We're going on a bear hunt', the show was amazing - we all loved joining in with the singing and dancing. The children were fantastic on our trip - they behaved impeccably and were a credit to the school. Well done to you all!
Week beginning 28th January 2019
Wow! Another week over already and what a fun week we have had. In PE we have completed our 'Jungle Journey' adventure - we have been working hard on our balancing, travelling in a space, starting and stopping with control, jumping, hopping and moving in different ways. Next week we are starting our new PE unit and we can't wait to see what it is!
In Maths this week we have focussed on length and height. We have measured ourselves and our feet, used cubes to measure objects and made long creatures using a range of craft materials.
On Friday we were delighted to see snow again. We went outside and explored the snow and while we were exploring we noticed some blocks of ice. When we took a closer look we saw some dinosaurs trapped inside. We discussed different ways in which we may be able to free them. After a few failed attempts we got a cup of warm water and tried pouring that onto the ice. We were ecstatic when we saw the ice melt and the dinosaurs set free!
To finish off our wonderful week the children were lucky enough to take part in a court case pantomime in the school hall. They had to listen to evidence from Goldilocks about why she visited the Three Bears cottage and then evidence from the Three Bears about why Goldilocks should not have visited their cottage. The children then had to decide who was guilty of committing a crime. After some careful consideration it was decided that Goldilocks was the guilty party! What a great afternoon we had.
Brilliant problem solving this week Gateshead - you're all superstars! Well done on another great week.
Week beginning 21st January 2019
Another wonderful week in Reception! This week we have been looking at the story of 'Peter Rabbit'. We re-enacted the story using props, retold the story using story stones, identified the beginning, middle and end of the story, ordered the story using pictures and completed short burst writing on how Peter and Mr McGregor feel when Peter is in Mr McGregor's garden.
We have also taken part in the Big Garden Bird Watch. We explored the school grounds looking for birds and made a tally of the birds we found on our spotters sheet. We also made bird feeders to take home. We are going to hang these outside to try and spot some new birds at home.
In Maths we tasted a range of different fruits and made a pictogram to show which fruit we liked best - mango and apple proved to be very popular!
On Friday we made some delicious vegetable soup for our snack - we used leeks, parsnips, potatoes and carrots. We helped to peel and chop the vegetables then mix them altogether in the pan. We also made some painted pictures by printing using lots of different vegetables.
Well done Gateshead - keep up the great work!
Week beginning 14th January 2019
This week in our Primary Writing Project we have been looking at the book 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell. We have been very busy with a range of owl based activities. We used costumes, story stones and puppets to help us to retell the story. We learned about nocturnal animals and sorted pictures of nocturnal animals according to their size. We held a real feather and thought about words we could use to describe it. We worked together to describe an owl based on a photograph. We also made our own amazing owl collages.
In Maths we have looked at 3D shapes - we thought about the shape of everyday objects and made our own 3D structures using the wooden blocks, boxes, packages and play dough.
On Thursday we had a lovely surprise when it started to snow - we were all very excited to put on our coats, hats, gloves and wellies and play outside. We enjoyed mark making in the snow, making tyre tracks with the scooters and catching snowflakes in our mouths.
A great week Gateshead - enjoy your weekend!
Week beginning 7th January 2019
Happy New Year and a big welcome back to you all! We have talked a lot about Christmas and it sounds like everyone has had a great time.
The children have settled back into their first week really well and what a busy week it has been. Our Primary Writing Project focus has all been based around the story 'Shark in the Park' - we have enjoyed many activities linked to the story, such as, shark hunting, acting out the story in the tuff tray, rhyming activities, describing sharks and designing, making and testing boats to float.
We also thought about goals we would like to work towards and achieve in 2019. Some of our goals included learning to ride a scooter, becoming better at football, learning to swim and improving in gymnastics. Mrs Richter has displayed these on the display board in the classroom. I know you will all work hard to achieve your goals!
In our Maths sessions we have been looking at 2D shapes - the children loved going on a shape hunt around school. They were fantastic at finding many different shapes in the environment.
To finish off our busy week we made some delicious scones for our snack on Friday. We all took turns to mix the ingredients together and then we used cutters to make our own scone. Delicious smells filled the classroom all morning.
Well done Gateshead for a great first week back!
Week beginning 17th December 2018
Merry Christmas to you all from Gateshead class - what a fabulous first term we have had in Reception. The children have worked so hard and fully embraced their first term. We have had a lovely Christmas filled last week together which was finished off with our marble jar treat afternoon of a pyjama party and Christmas movie. We hope you all have a brilliant Christmas - we look forward to welcoming you all back to school on the 7th January. Please enjoy looking through our Nativity play photographs - I'm sure you'll agree that they are amazing!
Week beginning 10th December 2018
Wow! What a week! It has been very busy but so much fun. We started off our week with a new story 'Little Jack', it is all about a little boy who goes on a journey to his grandmas with a basket of objects (the same as the basket we had delivered last week). The children have taken ideas from this and 'Charlie's Walk' to create their own story using a story map. I'm really impressed with some of the ideas that the children came up with - very inventive!
At the end of the week we took part in a computing session with ladies from the Gateshead Library Service. We used a piece of technology called 'Makey Makey' to create our own circuits.
We then finished the week off in style with a fabulous Christmas party.
I can't finish this weeks news without mentioning the fabulous Nativity play we performed on Wednesday. The children were superstars - we were so impressed with their enthusiasm and courage to perform in front of so many people. I am sure you are very proud of your children, as I know the whole staff team have been beaming with pride since their amazing performance.
The children really deserve their rest after such a busy week - have a great weekend and I look forward to our final week together of 2018!
Week beginning 3rd December 2018
What a mysterious week we have had in Gateshead class. On Monday we had a special delivery from the North Pole - an elf arrived in our classroom! He is a kindness elf and is going to leave us random acts of kindness to complete each day. At the end of each day he will choose two children who have worked hard to complete this task to choose our class story from our Advent book countdown. I am sure he is going to be really impressed with the children in Gateshead. Then on Tuesday we had a mystery basket delivered to the class - there was a note attached which said 'Please look after me'. We had lots of discussion about the basket - who brought it? What is inside? Why is it in our classroom? Where did it come from? The children had lots of amazing ideas about the basket - we hope the mystery will be solved soon!
Week beginning 26th November 2018
This week in Gateshead we have started with our festive preparations. We have been working so hard to practise the songs for our Nativity performance which is on the 12th of December. On Friday we held our Christmas Stay and Play where our grown ups came to make some Christmas decorations with us - thank you to everyone that came, we hope you enjoyed your morning.
As well as all of these busy activities we have still been working hard on our story innovations and in our phonics sessions. In Maths this week we have been working on our number recognition - one of our favourite activities was to play Bingo.
You have been superstars this week - well done to all of you!
Week beginning 19th November 2018
This week we welcomed a new teacher into Gateshead class. Miss Baker is a year one student from Northumbria University and will be working with us on a Thursday and Friday until March.
In our PWP time we have made a brilliant start to our individual story maps - we have used our magpie display to create our own 'good' and 'bad' characters who go on a journey under the sea. The children have remembered time connectives (first, then, finally etc.) and positional language (through, under, around etc.) which we have been working on over the past few weeks - I am so proud of their innovations and can't wait to see the finished products.
In Maths this week we have looked at combining two amounts to make a total - the children have all worked super hard on this and have shown a really good understanding of this concept.
On Friday we made some beautiful stained glass windows to brighten up the classroom - Mrs Richter displayed these and we're really impressed with how wonderful they look. We also worked as a team to make a friendship potion - we talked about the qualities we look for in a good friend and we shared some amazing ideas, such as, love, sharing, cuddles, kindness and helping us if we are sad or upset. I would definitely agree that these are fabulous qualities to have.
Well done on another great week everyone!
Week beginning 12th November 2018
This week, during our Primary Writing Project, we have been very busy preparing for our story innovations next week. We used the story book Tiddler by Julia Donaldson and a clip from the film Finding Nemo to magpie some ideas, ready for our own 'under the sea' story maps.
In Maths, we have been working on more, fewer and the same - we completed a range of independent activities as well as some focussed sessions on this, and we produced some amazing work!
On Friday, we enjoyed our non uniform day for Children in Need. We took part in a range of Pudsey/spotty activities throughout the day, as well as visiting Toronto's amazing bring and buy sale. Thank you so much to everyone for your kind donations - we will let you know how much we managed to raise as soon as we have the grand total.
Week beginning 5th November 2018
Another jam-packed week for Gateshead class and what a fun week it has been. We have enjoyed a visit to the library where we listened to a story and took part in a jungle hunt - we were super listeners throughout the story and worked so well with our partner to find all of the jungle animals which were hiding around the library. In PE, we have started a jungle journey adventure - this involves developing our fundamental movement skills while following a journey to the jungle. On Friday, we learnt about Remembrance Day - we talked about why we wear poppies and discussed what happens on Remembrance Sunday. We then made an amazing poppy collage and some delicious poppy biscuits, which we enjoyed at snack time. A huge well done to you all on another wonderful week.

The children were all absolute superstars throughout the day and a great day was had by all. Thank you to all of the adults who helped us during the trip - we hope you had as much fun as we did!
Week beginning 1st October 2018
As part of our Primary Writing Project, we have focussed on 'Harvest'. We magpied some interesting farming vocabulary from the story 'Tractor Ted', then we made a story map showing the steps which are needed for a farmer to grow his crops. To help us retell these steps, we devised some actions for some of the words we used, such as, first, then and finally.
Week beginning 24th September 2018
We have had a very busy week in Gateshead class. This week we started our phonics sessions and we learnt the sounds m, s, a and d. We then enjoyed a range of activities linked to these sounds, such as, painting mountains, speed stacking, apple printing, exploring magnets and the dinosaur land.

The children in Gateshead have continued to settle into the class brilliantly. We have enjoyed celebrating International Dot Day, which was on September 15th, by listening to the story of 'The Dot' by Peter Reynolds. This then gave us inspiration to create our own 'Dot' pictures - we used a range of techniques, such as, printing, collage and painting.
We are so proud of how well the children have settled - it is lovely to see so many smiling faces arrive at school each morning. Well done everyone!
The children in Gateshead have had a brilliant start to their Reception year. We can't wait to have lots of fun this year!
