Welcome to the Gateshead Reception Class Page. Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this year.
Week beginning 19th July 2021
What a wonderful end to our Reception year. This week we have celebrated all of our achievements and revisited some of our favourite activities from the year; music and dancing, reading our spine books, dough disco, handwriting using our Read Write Inc mantras, measuring in maths, various art activities and writing all about our hopes and dreams for next year. It has been a bit of a mixed up year with isolation, lockdowns and working in our bubble but the children have taken it all in their stride and have shown so much enthusiasm towards school life and their learning. They have made a brilliant start to their Emmaville journey and now deserve to have a wonderful summer and a well earned rest.
Have a lovely break and enjoy some family time together. Take care everyone, stay safe and we'll see you all in September. Happy holidays!
This week has concluded our Reception phonics journey for the year. It is wonderful to see how much the children have developed with their sound recognition, decoding skills, letter formation, blending and segmenting. I feel very privileged to be able to help the children begin their reading journey and, at this time of year, I always feel a huge sense of pride about how far they have come. The children have worked their absolute socks off all year in their phonics sessions. Fred the frog has been super impressed and the whole of the reception team are extremely proud of you all. Hope you all have a lovely weekend before embarking on our last week together. Well done Team Gateshead!
Wow what a jam packed week we have had! This week was our enrichment week following the theme of the Olympic Games. We have explored this brilliant event throughout many curriculum areas including DT, art, history, geography, PE and PSHE. Our week ended in fine style with our garden party on Thursday and our wonderful Olympic closing ceremony on Friday. The children have thoroughly enjoyed their week and have learnt so much about different athletes and sports, the Olympic values and all about Tokyo, where this years games will be held. As always the children have been absolute superstars all week and showed so much amazing team spirit and determination during our sports day which was held on Monday. I'm so proud of every single one of them.
Have a lovely weekend everyone and, for those of you watching the game on Sunday, I hope it's a good result! Come on England!
As the end of the year is fast approaching it is lovely to look back and reflect on how far the children have progressed on their Reception journey. A huge part of the Early Years curriculum is learning through play and this week it was lovely to observe some amazing learning opportunities during self chosen tasks. The children enjoyed exploring, investigating and experimenting throughout all areas of the classroom. Here area few photographs showing these wonderful skills in action.
Another week over already! The children have been superstars this week - it’s hard to pick a highlight from the week as there are so many but this week I really want to celebrate our fabulous maths work. This week our focus was sharing quantities equally. First we used lots of different concrete materials to help us understand this concept, then we used pictorial representations of sharing and finally we were able to articulate our sharing knowledge into a sentence by explaining how and why we had shared fairly or unfairly. The children blew my socks off with their great work - I am so proud of you! Have a lovely weekend everyone, you’ve definitely earned it!
Week beginning 14th June 2021
This week we concluded our English work based on the story of 'The Rainbow Fish' by Marcus Pfister. We have worked hard to identify the beginning, middle and end of the story, thought about the character traits which the rainbow fish displayed at the beginning and end of the story and discussed a range of adjectives describing what makes a good friend. Throughout the week we have enhanced the classroom environment by providing a range of activities and props linked to the story. The children have loved looking at different animals from under the sea and watching some real life clips from the amazing Blue Planet.
We have all had a wonderful first week back. The weather has been very kind to us and we've spent lots of time outside in the fresh air - we even had the chance to have a little play on the year one yard! It was lots of fun and gave us a little taster of how our playtime will be in September.
For the next six weeks we are fortunate enough to have some football coaching for our outdoor PE lesson. Coach Vicky from Little Kickers taught us some new football techniques and was very impressed with our footballing skills. The children were really enthusiastic about their session and it really got us in the mood for Euro 2021!
Another half term over already - I can’t believe how quickly this school year is passing. I am so proud of the whole class for their amazing work this half term. You have all worked so hard and been absolute superstars. It is wonderful to see how far you have all come this year and it was amazing to share all of your achievements this week with your grown ups during our consultations. I know they’re all very proud of you too. The half term ended in fine style with the amazing rainbow fun run. It was so lovely to see you all make such an effort with your rainbow clothes, hair and face paint for this brilliant event. You have all earned your half term break so have a lovely time (fingers crossed we get some sunshine) and we’ll see you very soon for our final half term together.
Week beginning 17th May 2021
Since returning to school after lockdown we have had a strong focus on mindfulness and well-being. During our indoor PE sessions we have enjoyed taking part in some Yoga Bugs sessions. The programme focuses on core strength and relaxation techniques and is completed through various story telling sessions. The children have loved learning lots of new yoga poses and have thoroughly enjoyed the relaxation element at the end of each lesson. Here are a few photographs demonstrating our amazing flexibility and a short video clip to show how relaxing our sessions have been.
On Monday we had a mysterious treasure chest arrive in our class. It was filled with lots of pirate loot and our new story 'Pirate Tom'. This week we have been busy learning the story using a story map and actions to help us. We have enjoyed lots of pirate activities around the classroom including writing messages in bottles, making treasure maps, acting out the story using props and playing in our pirate cove. Next week we will be innovating our story by changing the characters from the story. It has been a very busy, swashbuckling week! Well done Gateshead Class!
This week we concluded our 'Hocus Pocus' work in English. To finish off our topic we took part in a bubbling potion experiment. We looked at all of the ingredients we had then made some predictions about what might happen if we added them all together.
Lana - if we mix the blue and yellow food colouring it will make green.
Harriet - if we put it all together it might make a volcano.
Zack - it might be magic and make the Numberblocks come alive.
Ellie - it might make an explosion.
Faith - it will make a horrible smell.
After our discussion and predictions we got to work on our experiment. We carefully added one ingredient at a time. When we added the baking soda at the end we were all very excited to see that a bubbling explosion occurred! We talked about how the ingredients had reacted together to make this happen. The children were so enthusiastic about this activity and demonstrated great listening and discussion skills throughout. Well done Team Gatesead!
Another week over and it's definitely true that time really does fly when you're having fun. We have had another great week in Gateshead class with lots of busy work and some great teamwork. This week we started our new PSHE topic of 'Relationships'. Our focus for this week was to think about our families and people who live in our house and discuss why they are important to us. We then talked about the roles these people play and important jobs they do for us. The children then came up with a list of important jobs they do themselves at home:
Oscar - I fold up my pyjamas and put them on my bed.
Lana - I help look after my baby sister.
Alice - I help to wash the car.
Scarlett - I tidy my bedroom.
Charlie - I take care of my new baby.
It sounds like we have so many helpful children in Reception!
Week beginning 19th April 2021
What a super first week back we have had. It has been lovely to be able to spend some time outside in the glorious sunshine - hopefully this gorgeous weather will continue throughout the term.
This week I really want to celebrate our fabulous maths work. We have been looking at numbers beyond 10 - particularly our teen numbers 11-19. We have looked at how these numbers are partitioned, for example, that 13 is made up of a full block of ten and three. We used lots of manipulatives (cubes, Numicon and counters) to help us understand this concept. I was really impressed with how the children explored teen numbers with their partner and then continued their learning during their choosing time. A big well done to you all for a fab first week back Team Gateshead!
Wow - another term over already! Since coming back to school following lockdown the children have amazed us with their resilience and positive attitude. It is so lovely to hear the buzz of excitement around the classroom again. This week the children have continued to work super hard and have enjoyed lots of Easter themed activities. Well done Team Gateshead! I hope you have a wonderful Easter with your family.
Week beginning 15th March 2021
Another great week in Gateshead class and this week I really want to celebrate our super work in PE. It was a beautifully sunny day for our outdoor PE session on Monday and this certainly put a spring in our step. At the beginning of our lesson we thought about what makes a good throw and catch. The children came up with some super suggestions, such as, keeping your eye on the ball, getting your hands ready to catch and not throwing the ball too high. We then put these skills to te test and demonstrated some fantastic throwing and catching. Not only did we really improve our ball skills during the session but the teamwork throughout was wonderful to see - the children really encouraged each other by helping one another and clapping and cheering for each other. Well done Gateshead - it's so lovely to be back in our team again!
It is so lovely to have everyone back in school. The week has been full of smiles, laughter, fun and happiness! The main focus for our week has been settling back in, becoming reacquainted and lots of discussion about our lockdown experiences. The children were introduced to Wilbur, our class worry monster and we took
part in a wide range of PSHE activities using lots of different stories to help us settle back into school life. I am super proud of how well all of the children have settled back in - it’s so wonderful to have you back Team Gateshead!
Congratulations to Alfie for winning our 'story in a box' competition for World Book Day!
Week beginning 1st February 2021
What a wonderful week we have had celebrating ‘Children’s Mental Health Week’. We have loved seeing all of the fantastic activities you have been busy doing at home!
Week beginning 25th January 2021
Another great week everyone! We have love seeing all of your snowy adventures this week as well as all of your amazing work. Have a lovely weekend and we’ll see you (virtually) next week for our well-being themed week.
Week beginning 18th January 2021
Well done for another wonderful week. There has been so much amazing work produced again this week and I have felt extremely proud of you all. Your grown ups are doing a fantastic job of helping you all with your busy work so a big thank you to them too. I can’t wait to see some more super work next week. Have a lovely weekend everyone and take care.
Week beginning 11th January 2021
Wow Gateshead Class! You have blown me away with all of your AMAZING work this week. It has been an absolute delight to see all of your lovely posts and updates on Tapestry - keep them coming as they really make me smile. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend - enjoy a well deserved rest with your family.
Week beginning 4th January 2021
Hello everyone and a big 'Happy New Year' to you all. What a start to 2021 with the closure of school for the majority of children. We are so sad that we only got to spend one day with you all but it was great to hear all about your Christmas holidays on Monday. We can't wait to see all of your posts about all of the busy work you are doing at home with your grown ups. Stay safe everyone and we look forward to seeing you all soon!
Week beginning 14th December 2020
What a wonderful end to our first term! We have had so much festive fun with our Christmas party, pantomime day with Christmas jumpers, looking at 'The Jolly Christmas Postman' story and so many other Christmassy activities. We finished our week with our marble jar party - a pyjama party with snacks while we watched the brilliant Stick Man animation. It got us all feeling very festive and extremely excited for Christmas.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big well done to all of the children in Gateshead class - even though things are very different at the moment for us all the children have taken everything in their stride and been an absolute credit to yourselves and Emmaville. Everyday they make us so proud with their resilience and positive attitude. Well done Team Gateshead!
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2021!
This week we have had a fun filled festive week with lots of Christmas activities. We have been busy with Christmas crafts, looked super smart for our Christmas Jumper Day, had lots of fun at the Mog workshop with Seven Stories and, of course, enjoyed our delicious Christmas lunch cooked by Lisa and the kitchen team. Please enjoy looking at some of our very festive photographs. I have also included a video of our brilliant Makaton performance of the song 'We wish you a Merry Christmas'. I'm sure you will agree that the children's signing is amazing!
We have been feeling very festive in Gateshead class this week. Our week began with an exciting video message from Santa - he has asked us to take part in a very important challenge! Our mission is to collect 300 carrots to fuel his reindeer for their busy night which is fast approaching. In order to earn carrots we need to complete some physical challenges - each minute of exercise we complete earns us one carrot. Well, Gateshead class did not disappoint - we have all worked our socks off and made a great start to our mission. We have taken part in lots of dough disco, cosmic yoga, penguin dancing and go noodle, as well as our weekly PE sessions. I’m sure we’re going to collect 300 carrots very quickly and make Santa and his reindeer very happy.
This week we started our new Talk for Writing story. It is called 'The Little Green Dinosaur' and is all about a baby dinosaur who has lost his mummy. We have been busy learning the story using actions and our story map and enjoyed lots of other dinosaur activities during our choosing time. We have learnt lots of new dinosaur themed words which we have explored the meaning of, these include; carnivore, herbivore, extinct, reptile and prehistoric. I'm sure that, by the end of our unit, we are all going to be dinosaur experts!
Wow Gateshead class - you have blown us away with your amazing bake off skills. We had some fantastic entries - all of your bakes looked delicious!! It was a very tough decision but our Children in Need bake off winner was..... Scarlett!! Well done Scarlett for your scrumptious looking Blush cupcakes. A big thank you and well done to all of our other star bakers too!
Wow Gateshead, what a busy week it has been! You have been so amazing with your home learning activities and have made us all feel extremely proud. Thank you to all of your grown ups too for being so brilliant! We have enjoyed lots of phonics and maths work and, of course, some lovely activities based around Remembrance Day and Children in Need. We hope you have a lovely restful weekend - you all deserve it. It won't be long until we're back at school together again and we can't wait to see you all. Take care everyone and stay safe.
Welcome back everyone! It sounds like everyone had a great half term and enjoyed lots of spooky Halloween fun. This week we have started a journey to the jungle as part of our PE lessons. We will be continuing this journey throughout the half term to help develop our fundamental movement skills, such as, balancing, crawling, jumping, hopping, throwing and catching. The children have all worked really hard on their first week back - it's lovely to see their enthusiasm and excitement when learning new things - well done Gateshead class, a great start to the half term!
This week our main maths focus was all about comparing amounts. We used a range of manipulatives (cubes, sweets, toys and blocks) to find which group (from a choice of two) had more, fewer or equal objects. The children then worked hard to articulate their findings into a sentence, for example, three is fewer than five.
It has been so lovely to get to know each of the children during the first few weeks of their school life. They have all been absolute superstars; working hard and being so enthusiastic about everything we do!
We hope you all have a lovely half term together and we look forward to welcoming you back to school next Monday for another exciting half term. Stay safe everyone.
Another wonderful week in Gateshead class. This week we enjoyed the story 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell. The children have enjoyed acting out the story using various props, making their own owl pictures, looking at nocturnal and diurnal animals and thinking about words to describe an owl feather. To finish off our lovely week we listened to the story 'Wow said the owl' and joined in with the song 'A wise old owl'. Have a lovely weekend Gateshead class and we look forward to seeing you all next week for our last week before half term.
This week the children have enjoyed the story 'Shark in the Park' by Nick Sharratt. We have had a very busy week with lots of shark themed activities in the classroom; we made our own telescopes and went on a shark hunt, acted out the story using small world resources, made play dough sharks and danced along to the baby shark song. We also found out many interesting shark facts and completed some shared writing based on our findings. The children worked hard to identify the rhyming words from the story and blew us away with their fantastic rhyming knowledge throughout the week. Well done Gateshead - another super week!
Another great week in Gateshead class this week. I am so proud of how well the children have adjusted to their new routines and environment - they have all been superstars!
This week we have introduced the children to maths sessions. Our focus for this week was counting and the children worked really hard to develop their counting skills both by recalling numbers in order and counting objects using one to one correspondence.
A big welcome to Gateshead Class to all of our new Reception children and their families. This week we have played lots of getting to know you games, met Rambo (our class tortoise), learned the sounds m, s, a, d and t in our phonics sessions and enjoyed exploring our new classroom environment. The children have settled into their new class very well and have had a super week. I can't wait to spend the year with you on your Reception learning journey - we are going to have so much fun!

Part 2: Cookie Policy
Last Edited: 22nd April 2021

What are cookies?
Cookies are small data files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are widely used by online service providers in order to (for example) make their websites or services work, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information.
Cookies set by the website owner or service provider (in this case, eSchools) are called “first party cookies”. Cookies set by parties other than the website owner are called “third party cookies”. Third party cookies enable third party features or functionality to be provided on or through the website or service you are using (such as advertising, interactive content and analytics). The third parties that set these third party cookies can recognise your computer both when it visits the website or service in question and also when it visits certain other websites or services.

These third party cookies are used to tailor content and information that we may send or display to you and otherwise personalise your experience while interacting with our Services and to otherwise improve the functionality of the Services we provide. We also enable schools to employ cookies and similar tracking technologies in connection with their use of our Services in order to allow them to track visitors to and interactions with their school website.

User Embedded Content
Our Services allows schools to embed code which may potentially contain cookies. Please note embedded content, if displayed on one of our websites, has been added by the school and not by eSchools.
