Cracking Computers Enrichment Week

27th November 2018

In this Enrichment Week, the children explored different aspects of computing, including coding and Internet Safety.   We explored coding using lots of different programs and equipment, including Scratch, Alex, Kodable, Bee-Bots, Raspberry Pi units, laptops and ipads, to name but a few.  Gateshead Library Services lent us a set of programmable Micro:bits to try out, which were great fun - they can also be borrowed at any time with a library card.  The Library Service also sent in a fantastic team of three staff for a day to work with each class to try out Makey Makey kits; these enabled us to turn everyday objects into touchpads that controlled what happened on the screen.  It was great fun, and we even made human circuits!
A big part of the week, however, involved working together and developing our co-operative skills, growth mindset and resilience.  The children learnt about internet safety, and produced informative posters to help others keep safe on line; they thought about and designed computers of the future; and they worked in teams to create brand new apps.  Some of the children even scripted and filmed some TV adverts for their new apps - you can see them on the Years 5 & 6 Class Pages.
