PSHE (including Health, RSE) Curriculum Overview

At Emmaville we have chosen to follow the Jigsaw scheme of work for our PSHE curriculum.  We have chosen this scheme as we feel it best fits with our school ethos and school values.  We believe that PSHE underpins the whole child and equips children with essential skills for the wider world; developing skills and attributes to protect and enhance their well-being.  Through PSHE lessons children will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens in their community.  The Jigsaw programme is a sequential scheme where children revisit topics each year and build upon their prior knowledge.  The themes and topics which are covered enable children to develop their identity and self-esteem as active, confident members of the community.  The Jigsaw scheme of work also covers the requirements of the statutory Relationships and Health Education 2020 which can be found here.

Curriculum Drivers

The School’s Curriculum Drivers are reflected in our PSHE Education:

Learning from the past

There are many famous historical child theorists who have shaped how we look at and understand the whole child in order to help them reach their full potential.  At Emmaville we see the importance of learning from these theories and developing the whole child to ensure our children leave school as well-rounded individuals who are prepared for later life.

Living in the Present

PSHE for the children in our school is taught in thematic units.  Each year group will deliver the same theme at the same time and this is taught as a spiral curriculum revisiting each theme every year.  This enables children to recall and build upon previous learning, exploring the underlying principles of PSHE education regularly at a depth that is appropriate for the age and stage of the child.  Our PSHE curriculum consists of the following themes each year:

  • Being Me in My World looks at helping children to understand their place in their class, their school and as part of a global community.
  • Celebrating Difference explores diversity and looks at differences in a positive way.  Children will learn about being fair and showing respect for others.
  • Dreams and Goals focusses on goal-setting, children's aspirations and how we work together as a team.
  • Healthy Me looks at positive self-esteem and confidence as well as healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Relationships helps children understand friendship, family and other relationships, conflict resolution and communication skills.
  • Changing Me focusses on relationships education in the context of coping positively with changes and preparation for moving on and transition.

Preparing for the Future

The Jigsaw scheme of work is designed so every Jigsaw unit has two Learning Intentions, one specific to PSHE and the other designed to develop emotional literacy and social skills.  We believe that our PSHE curriculum gives pupils the tools to develop the knowledge and skills needed to thrive as individuals.  Through developing these attributes, we feel that the children will leave our school equipped to deal with any challenges and responsibilities they may face and become valued members of our society.
