Parliamentary Week

18th November 2022

On Monday 14th November – 18th November, it was National Parliament week. We were very fortunate to have Liz Twist, Member of Parliament for the Blaydon Constituency visit our school to meet with the Year 3 and Year 6 pupils.
Before Liz’s visit, there had been class discussions about the roles, responsibilities and the work that members of Parliament are paid to do. The class discussions led into political debates where the children were able to put to good use their oracy skills. In advance of Liz’s visit, the children prepared questions that they could ask her. Throughout the duration of the visit, we were amazed at some of the children’s thought-provoking questions, especially Poppy’s (South America) where she asked Liz’s views about The Right Honourable Matt Hancock partaking in a reality television show. I suppose you can all guess the response from Liz. Good one Poppy!
The visit certainly gave our children an insight into the life of a Member of Parliament. Liz spoke passionately about her role; it was clearly evident that we have a MP who strongly believes in community cohesion and is committed to getting the best support for the people in the community she represents. Thank you, Liz.
