Antarctica Year 5

Welcome to the Antarctica Year 5 Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Friday 15th May

Danger! Danger! This week, having looked at nutritional values of a variety of food types and designed packaging for a Bolognese sauce in our last food technology session, we learnt how to prepare ingredients safely.  Washing our hands and keeping cutting surfaces clean came first, but most importantly, we developed safe knife skills.  We learnt how to use a 'bridge hold' and a 'claw grip' to chop and slice a variety of fruit, always keeping the cutting edge down and away from us.  The end result was a lovely, fresh fruit salad each, and even better, everyone returned home with the correct number of fingers...

Wow - I am sure you will all agree that the children have blown our socks off with their class assembly this afternoon! I am so proud of them, as I know a lot of them felt very nervous to perform to a packed hall. Well done Antarctica class!

I want to celebrate the children's amazing maths work this week. We have been working on fractions this half term, which aren't always the easiest thing, and they have been so resilient and worked incredibly hard. The children have worked tirelessly to master the skills that we need, and I cannot thank them enough for their enthusiasm and effort! I feel like it was only a matter of weeks since this lovely class came into year 5, and now we are beginning to prepare for year 6!

Enjoy your weekend,

Friday 1st May

Happy Friday everybody! This week has been a super busy one for year 5 – and the children have worked their socks off!

On Tuesday, we headed to the Glasshouse for a performance from the Royal Northern Sinfonia. They were performing the ‘Sounds of the Deep’ performance – playing 5 classical pieces with a full orchestra. It was absolutely fantastic, and it was amazing to see the children appreciating the music! Here is what some of the children thought:

‘I liked it when they did the scuba diving part, and we had to pretend to be a wave.’ Thomas

‘It felt as if we were underwater!’ Imogen

‘The colours and the lights were great!’ Charlie

‘I liked at the end when we found out the true meaning of treasure – it is all about knowledge and what you can learn!’ Lana

‘I liked how the orchestra interacted with the audience.’ Molly Ba

On Wednesday, we then had one of our favourite mornings – the music workshop! This term’s theme was all about The World Cup, and we had so much fun singing and dancing along to the music. What a fantastic morning!

Have a lovely long weekend, and a very well-deserved rest!

Friday 24th April
Wow - what a great first week back! The children have absolutely blown my socks off this week with how hard they have worked and their attitude. Keep it up Antarctica class!

Today in PSHE, we have looked at self esteem and the ways that we can boost our own view of ourselves. The children had to make a list of the qualities that they admire about themselves, which included things like being kind, hardworking and a good friend. Then, they all walked around the classroom and added something to everybody's sheet. The children were overjoyed with the writing that the others had added to their sheets, and it was so lovely to see them all share what they admire about themselves and others. It was a lesson that made my heart so full! They are such a lovely bunch.

Have a fabulous weekend in the sun!
