Making Healthy Wraps

This term, children have been learning all about healthy eating using the Eatwell Plate. They explored the different food groups and why our bodies need a balanced diet to stay healthy and active. As part of their learning, the children designed their own healthy sandwiches and then went on to make a nutritious wrap. They carefully selected ingredients to include a balance of protein, vitamins and minerals, and dairy, thinking about both health and taste. The children showed great enthusiasm and creativity, and developed a fantastic understanding of how to make healthy food choices.

There were mixed opinions of the wraps- some of the children gave it a big thumbs up and thought they were delicious, others children were not as keen on their chosen wraps!

Take One Book- LOTS!

This term we've been loving reading the book LOTS- The Diversity of Life on Earth. The children have been experimenting with their voices reading the story with expression. They thought it was hilarious when Miss Woolard read the story in such a monotonous way and demanded that I read the book with 'passion'.

Later in the week, we took on the role of explorers and put to work out research and computing skills using the Ipads to find out facts about some of the species which have been discovered in the last 50 years from Pignose Frogs to the Wunderpus Octopus. The children worked very well with their learning partners to produce a factfile showcasing these strange but wonderful creatures.

We really do LOVE our Take One Book lessons. There is always such a buzz in the room as they debate, share and discover exciting new books.
Friday 16th January

What a lovely end to the week we've had, here in Wales Class, finishing on a Friday with some taste-testing.  Our Design and Technology lessons this half term are focused on food, so after looking at all the important food groups, we discussed our favourites from each section (proteins, carbohydrates, fruit & vegetables, dairy and fats & oils).  All that talk of food made us quite hungry, so we were raring to go with this week's exploration of five different foods: mango, cheese, pitta bread, pepper and hummus.  As this was an exploration, rather than a feast, we slowed it down to think hard about smells, textures, and all the different types of taste.  Have you ever properly savoured cheese to identify all the different flavours?  We thought we could taste creaminess, nuttiness, some sweetness and then saltiness - all from a little piece of cheddar.  Least popular was the garlicky hummus, but a definite winner was the mango!
