Emmaville Primary School

South America Year 6

Welcome to the South  America Year 6 Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Thursday 18th December

Wow... our final week of 2025 in South America, it really has flown by! We have had a lovely week winding down and getting ready for the holidays. I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas cards that came home this week, I was so proud of all of them! I hope you all have a restful but magical festive period, see you all in the new year.
Friday 12th December

Wow, I can't believe we only have one week left at school for this year... it really is flying! We have had a lovely week as part of our enrichment, 'A cultural celebration'. We have been lucky enough to have a fabulous guest speaker in from The Anne Frank Trust, who delivered a workshop to us all about prejudice, going all the way back to Anne Frank right up to modern day. We have also been looing at other cultural celebrations during winter time such as Hannukah and Diwali.

Our favourite piece of work this week however, has been researching how other countries celebrate Christmas. We split up into groups and began researching, before presenting our posters to the rest of the class at the end. I'm sure the children would love to tell you all about the country they researched, we all learnt lots from each other.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
Friday 5th December

I can't believe we're at the end of our first week in December, time really is flying! This week we have finished looking at percentages in maths, and had a fractions re-cap. All of the children did so well and I am so proud of them! We also finished all of our preparation work for our next story in English, which we will be writing next week, and I'm sure the children would love to tell you all about the characters they have developed.

In guided reading, we have been looking at a book called 'Rose Blanche' - which looks at WW2 from a German child's perspective - and teaches us a little about the Holocaust. We have been saddened to learn about the tragedies that happened all of those years ago, and how poorly Jewish people  (as well as disabled and other minorities) were treated. We tried to bring the book to life this week with some freeze frames, trying to get the rest of the class to guess our characters by our body language and positioning.

We have also been busy in craft club that I run on a Thursday lunch time. We have created some beautiful crafts since half term, but I particularly loved the Christmas stockings we created this week. I'm sure you'll agree they are so cute, and there will be more to come next week.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!
Friday 28th November

Another lovely week here in South America! We have been looking at speech sentences in English, and making sure we use the correct punctuation when we write them, as well as calculating percentages in maths. The children blew me away with their work on Thursday where we were calculating percentages in different multiples of 10 (20%, 30%, 80% etc.). They were excellent, and all took to the method so quickly!

We were also lucky enough to have a crime and forensics workshop on Tuesday. This involved taking a sample of our DNA, our fingerprints and analysing a crime scene. We had so much fun, and learnt lots from Graham - a real life ex-police officer - and even saw Mr Harrison get arrested!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!
Friday 21st November

Another brilliant week here in South America. We have been busy working on fractions, decimals and percentages in maths, as well as looking at how and why we classify living things in science. This week, we have also been working hard on our entries for Liz Twist's (our local MP) annual Christmas card competition. There was no theme this year, so just general Christmassy themed entries is what we were going for. The results were so beautiful, I was so impressed! The detail and precision in some of the cards was phenomenal, and they were all original and beautiful in their own way.

We also took a visit to Crawcrook library this morning, which was organised so well, we are so grateful to our wonderful library staff. We took a trip down memory lane, reflecting on our time at Emmaville over the years, as well as looking forward to our final month here. The children were so engaged, and also loved looking round at the wide selection of books available to borrow. There are SO many to choose from, I'm sure some of them will be asking you to take them to check out a book soon.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!
Friday 14th November

Another fabulous week here in South America! We have been so busy this week continuing our fractions in maths and writing up our non-chronological report all about evacuation during World War 2. This week was also Inter-Faith week, and our year group was assigned the Jewish festival of Hanukkah to explore. We looked at lots of different aspects of Hanukkah including the food, the games and the menorah candles. We had a carousel of activities and then used our experiences to write up a diary entry, imagining we were celebrating Hanukkah. The results were incredible; all of the writing was fantastic!

We also spent some time creating some remembrance art inspired by Jacqueline Hurley. The children were very mature and curious during the assembly that we attended on Tuesday, so we took the inspiration into our art lesson. The results were brilliant, they actually made me very emotional. I have compiled them all into a video for you below.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Friday 7th November

I can't believe we're already at the end of our first week back, I hope you all had a wonderful half term! We have jumped straight into action this week, start our new fractions unit in maths, as well as learning all about evacuation during our English lessons.

We have also moved from DT to art this week, so again have started a new topic. This half term, we will be looking at 3 different artists and their different styles of painting. Each week, we will explore their work and try to recreate a piece in their style, eventually leading to a final piece combining elements of all 3. On Tuesday, we looked at Lubaina Himid who is a British artist who focuses on telling stories of marginalised people through her bright and colourful work. As a starter exercise, the children worked in pairs to try and copy one of her famous paintings. The catch was, one child could see the image and and the other one couldn't. The person looking at the image had to describe what it looked like while the other one drew based on their instructions. We had some fantastic results at the end, as well as lots of fun in the process.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
Friday 24th October

Well, I can't believe we're at the end of half term already! The weeks have flown by, but we're all ready for a week off to re-charge and reset.

We have had a busy week here in South America, Wednesday being our first trip of the year. We visited Safety Works and had the opportunity for some hands on safety training from local experts. We had a brilliant day, and learnt lots from the demonstrations. The staff described it as like stepping into a movie scene, and it really was. The life-size models helped us understand potential dangers around us and really aided our understanding.

We also (finally) completed our sock monkeys. They have been a true labour of love, but they all look fantastic! I am so proud of all of the children for their hard work during this project, as sewing is a very tricky skill to master. The monkeys look brilliant, and I know the children have been desperate to bring them home.

I hope you all have a wonderful half-term, see you all soon!
Friday 17th October

Another wonderful week here in South America. The children looked lovely for their school photos on Monday and I can't wait to see the finished results. We have been working extremely hard in maths this week, learning a new method called long division. It is a really tricky skill but they have been so determined and have shown fantastic resilience all week. As a challenge, there are some questions below to see if you can show your families the method over the weekend. For anyone that takes on the challenge and brings me in their work on Monday, there are 10 house points up for grabs! I know everyone at home would be super impressed to see your hard work.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

Friday 10th October

The children this week must have known about today's date because they really have been 10/10! I am so proud to how they have adapted to year 6 and they have been fabulous all week. In maths, we have been looking at long multiplication this week. This is a really tricky skill but they have mastered it so well, and I'm sure they would love to show you this over the weekend, or complete the doodle assignment to show off their skills.

We have also been lucky enough to have Adam Bushnell, a local author, working with our class this week. We had a whole afternoon with a workshop all about the ancient Greeks. We developed monsters, heroes and even riddles to write in the style of an ancient Greek myth. Adam also brought in some ancient Greek armour and weapons that we were able to try to really get into character, and I'm sure you'll agree the children look amazing!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!
Friday 3rd October

Another wonderful week here in South America! We have been busy with our sock monkeys, our football coach on Monday and we have been looking at a new topic in maths. This week, we have been looking at shape and how 2D nets become 3D shapes. To help us visualising this process, we got the polydron from year 1 and had a chance to create our own nets and 3D shapes. The children loved this, and making maths hands on made it so much more memorable for them.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend!
Friday 26th September

Another amazing week here in South America, the children have been fantastic! During our science lessons this half term we have been looking at light and how it travels. This week, we were thinking about the properties of materials and learning some new vocabulary: transparent, translucent and opaque. We conducted an experiment to test how the shadows of these different materials would differ by making puppets out of a plastic wallet, baking paper and black card. We used a torch as our light source, and held it the same distance away from each of 3 puppets and each of the shadows were different. I'm sure the children will be able to explain the differences to you at home.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!
Friday 19th September

I can't believe that's another week down here in South America, the weeks are flying in! I am so proud of the children and how hard they are working, they have impressed me so much with their amazing start to year 6. Today, the children made their speeches and voted for who they wanted to represent them as their class school councillors. I am pleased to announce that the representatives voted for were Emily and Liam! I know they will both do a fantastic job at representing South America and will make wonderful school councillors.

I hope you all have a brilliant weekend!

Friday 12th September

Another wonderful week here in South America! The children have really impressed me with their hard work this week, and I am so looking forward tot he year ahead.

On Monday, we had our first session with a football coach and the children were brilliant. We were working on our passing skills, and making sure we were in a good space to support our teammates. We then put this into practice with some matches and I was so impressed with the skills and confidence of the class. I can't wait to see how these skills improve even further over the coming weeks.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!
Friday 5th September

Well, what a fabulous first week back we have had here in South America. The children have been fantastic and I have been so impressed by their lovely manners and positive attitude. We had our first sewing practice this week ahead of our sock monkey DT project this half term, and I have to say they really blew me away! In such a difficult skill, they remained calm, resilient and determined to succeed. All of the children produced brilliant work, and I can't wait to see how the monkeys turn out!

Have a lovely weekend everyone!
