Oceania Year 5

Welcome to the Oceania Year 5 Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Friday 20th June

Happy Friday everyone! It has been a brilliant but very warm week this week in Oceania class. We have been researching all about Brazil and England to make a comparison between the two places in our next lesson, learning all about how to convert units in Maths and planned a design for our soap sculptures in Art.

On Tuesday, we had the wonderful Jess from the Royal Forestry Society come into school to deliver a session with the Year 5 children all about trees! We have already worked with Jess earlier in the year to plant trees around our school grounds. During the session, Jess worked with the children to discuss about the different type of trees we have. We used some identification keys and looked at the leaves on the trees. This then helped us identify what type of tree we were looking at. We loved exploring the different types of trees in the lesson and finding out more about what we have in our school grounds.

Have a lovely sunny weekend!

Happy Friday everyone! It has been such a busy week this week in Oceania class filled with lots of learning about fractions, finding out all about Charles Thorp in our History lesson and researching about 3 British sculpture artists in our Art lesson.

This week we celebrated Sports Day on Wednesday morning. It was a battle of the houses with each of the children trying to get as many points as possible for their house teams. It was wonderful to see so many supporters come and watch the children take part and cheer them on. We had 8 events to complete in total, with 4 scoring points for our house team. The children worked hard at every station but especially with their running which was outstanding in both the sprint event and the middle distance. Last term, we spent a lot of time practicing this skill and learning how to set a pace and move our bodies in a certain way to help with sprinting. I couldn’t have been prouder of how well the children did at all of the events and their attitude throughout the morning was outstanding. Some of our Year 5 children went out during the KS1 sports day during the afternoon and were complimented for their outstanding attitude and how they were so supportive towards the younger children who were taking part in the events. It is moments like Sports Day which make you incredibly proud as a teacher and I couldn’t be prouder of the wonderful children we have in Oceania class.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Happy first week back everyone! We have loved being back in school to kickstart our final half-term in Year 5. I can't believe the amount of progress the children have made since the start of the year and they are such mature children with a fantastic attitude towards learning and life.

This week the children have been taking part in the Bikeability training to prepare themselves to be safe whilst out on their bikes and on the road. They started the week off by completing an initial assessment where they learned the safety features of the bike , how to stop safely and signals whilst out on a bike. Once the children passed the initial assessment, they were able to go out onto the local roads to practise more skills. They have been a credit to the school whilst being out and have all shown how amazing they are at picking up key skills to keep themselves safe. They have also told me how much they have loved completing this and that it has taught them new things that they didn't know before the training. Here a few quotes from the children :

'It was very fun to learn how to ride our bikes properly' - Freddie

'The instructors are amazing and have taught me a lot of new skills' - Charlotte

'I really loved Bikeability. The instructors were really helpful and kind especially after I hadn't been on a bike in 6 years' - Bodie

'It was really fun to use different techniques that I wouldn't have known before the training. The instructors were really kind' - Evie

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Happy half-term everyone! This half-term, the children in Oceania class have worked so hard within lessons. We have wrote some amazing action stories, continued to build up our understanding of fractions and we have explored the idea of karma, moksha and samsara in Hinduism.

This week I wanted to share with you the brilliant work the children have been completing in PE. Our unit for this half-term has been athletics alongside our weekly swimming sessions. Firstly, the children have been outstanding in swimming. I have been blown away every week by their stamina and confidence with swimming. At the start of the year we had some children who hadn't ever swam before and now they can all successfully swim 25m backstroke and some are so close to being able to also swim this using front crawl. Within our athletics lessons this term, we have focused on running. We started off by looking at long distance running and how to make sure you set a good pace to have endurance throughout the long run. We then looked at sprinting and how to sprint effectively with your body. We had children coaching each other on their form and we all tried to beat our times. This week we have explored the idea of relay racing where you need to pass a baton. We were very excited to work in our small teams to get running as fast as we could. We worked on our passing of the baton skills and perfected how to pass it to our partners. After this, we then tried doing a relay run around the track of the field. The children were unbelievable with how fast they ran and how well they worked as a team to pass the baton. Alongside their great stamina and determination, they also worked fantastically as a team with great teamwork and encouragement.

I hope you all have a lovely half-term holidays ready for our final half-term together!

Happy Rainbow Fun Run Day!!! We have had the most amazing day celebrating the Rainbow Fun Run at Emmaville. During the day, we have supported the classes with running, made flags to wave and have been such fantastic supportive friends. The kindness of the children in Oceania class never goes unnoticed and especially today when the children were so supportive to one another and other children across school. They made sure everyone had someone to run with when it was our turn and no one was left behind. Every time the other classes completed their run, they clapped and cheered and encouraged the children. They make me so proud as their class teacher of what wonderful young people they are and they all have the kindest hearts.

This week we have been learning all about deforestation in our Geography lesson. We found out that the biggest cause of deforestation is food production and the land being used for cattle ranching in the Amazon rainforest. During our lesson, we explored different perspectives from people around the world in regards to deforestation. Some of the perspectives were for deforestation and some were against. We had to decide in our pair which side of the argument each perspective was on. We then used these perspectives to have a class debate. We used our brilliant oracy skills to debate with one another about 'Should we have deforestation in the world?'. The children were fantastic at sharing ideas in the debate and they then used these ideas to write up an argument either for or against deforestation.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

We have had a great week in Oceania class as we have been doing so many different things. We have visited the NUF Careers Workshop in the Metro Centre where we explored what careers you could have and the skills that you need to have in jobs. We also celebrated VE day and had a class street tea party. The children enjoyed scones with jam and cream, crisps, cake and a decorated biscuit. Before we enjoyed the lovely celebrations, we planned a party as if we were in 1945. We had to imagine that we had our ration book and could only get certain items due to the war.

This week I wanted to share with you the amazing work the children have completed in DT. We had a wonderful workshop from Emma who has Tiny Tasters. She helped us to prepare and cook our own Vegetarian Bolognese. We had to prepare, cut and mix all of the ingredients together. I was so amazed by the children as they had very little help with any of the steps from myself, Mrs Dutta or Emma. We made our bolognese sauce with green lentils which was very different to anything that we had ever had before. Lots of us ate it when we got home with pasta and enjoyed trying something different. Well done for your super skills everyone!

Have a lovely sunny weekend!

Friday 2nd May

Happy Friday everyone! It has been a great first week back in Oceania class this week filled with lots of new learning. We have started our new ‘Action’ unit in English where we have been exploring a story called ‘Through the door’. As well as this, we have also been continuing with our learning about WWI and this week we explored what life was like for people in Britain during WWI. We found out all about the important role that children played in the war efforts, especially those that were boy scouts or girl guides.

This week I wanted to share with you all the wonderful work the children have started in Music where we have begun preparing for our Big Sing concert happening in July. We will be attending the event in July at the Glasshouse where a number of schools all come together with a band to sing songs. This year’s focus is Zero Gravity and all of the songs have a link to space. We have started learning 2 of the songs already called ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Fly with the stars’. In just 40 minutes, the children have already learnt these songs and are singing them beautifully. I was so impressed by their ability to pick up the lyrics so quickly and they are certainly going to wow at the concert. Keep an eye on our class page over the Summer term as there may be a sneak peak of us performing one of the songs.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend everyone!
