Emmaville Primary School

Asia Year 4

Welcome to the Asia Year 4 Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.

Thursday 2nd Friday

This week we have had our annual Easter Egg Competition, a Marble Jar treat, and we created our 3D ‘Mindfulness Digital Timer’ prototypes.

For our digital timers, we have researched timers, developed a criterion, designed a prototype, programmed micro bit timers, and finally made our 3D prototypes using nets.

It has been a fun week, and satisfying to complete our digital timer projects.

Have a great Easter break Class Asia.

Friday 27th March – PE (Hockey)

This term Asia have been developing their hockey skills. Competition is an essential part of sport and we finished the block of learning with a class tournament. It was a great tournament and every child showed and applied the skills they had learnt. They also worked well with their teams and everyone showed good sportsmanship. Well done Class Asia.

Friday 20th March - DT

This week in Class Asia we continued working on out ‘Mindfulness Timer’ in DT. The object this term is to design and create a mindfulness timer for a class to allow them to have a short, timed break of mindfulness during the day. The class had already researched and evaluated times, developed a criterion for what the user of the timer wants, and this week they used their IT skills to programme a microbit to count down from specified time in seconds to zero and play a sound. They also programmed it to reset as well. The children were excellent and all of them were successful in achieving their goal.

Friday 6th March

GSSP Year 4 Quicksticks Hockey Competition

On Tuesday. seventeen Year 4 children took part in the GSSP Quicksticks hockey competition against others schools. Emmaville had three teams entered and each played at least three league games. The winners of each league went into the semi-finals. All of our teams were excellent, winning at least one game each and playing great hockey. Not only that, but their attitude and effort was excellent. One of our teams got through to the semi-finals and ended up coming third in the whole competition, a very worthwhile achievement. All of the players had a great experience, and represented the Emmaville impeccably. Well done children.

World Book Day

Thursday was World Book Day and the children had a fun filled day all about books. The highlight being, the children came dressed as a loved book character (or in their PJs). The focus of the day was also on story characters, where the children created Top Trumps card for their favourite characters. They then had a Top Trumps ‘Character Battle’. The class also took part in an author Q&A session before finishing the day with a ‘Strange But True’ Fact file.

Friday 13th February

What a lovely week in Class Asia it has been, with lots of great learning and experiences. At Emmaville, we value oracy and promote it in all subjects. In science, we were working on the water cycle where we worked in groups to create a presentation and focused on oracy during this. Each group had a chair and summariser, as well as focusing on making it clear that everyone was listening. I was so impressed with how the children used their oracy skills to comminate and listen and take on different roles.

We also had a PE cluster event at Thorp where the children did a range of different physical, team and individual activities. It was a great afternoon.

Friday 6th February

This week Class Asia had the pleasure of taking part in our regular Prayer Space. It is always a lovely experience linked to religion, thoughtfulness and kindness. The children loved creating ‘Big Questions’, making a prayer, deciding what they would choose if they suddenly became a refugee and had to leave their home and country, and taking some time in the mindful tent to recognise their own feelings and thoughts.

Friday 30th January

A lovely week in Class Asia. In art we have learnt about Jackson Pollock, and applied our knowledge of tint to create a work in his style. We have continued our learning in trumpet. The whole class practiced together, and some children were keen to show their individual efforts. Well done everyone.

Friday 23rd January

What a fantastic week! We’ve had lots of great learning experiences. In PE, we have been focusing on gymnastics and this week, rolls (straight roll, barrel roll, straddle roll and forward roll). To build on the skills, the children combined other areas of learning to create a sequenced performance which included the rolls, balance, and travelling.

In computing, we have been learning about HTML (a language of websites). This week the children used their knowledge of HTML tags to remix the HTML of a website and modify elements of it.

In French, our focus has been ‘En Classe’. We have learnt classroom object and how to talk about what we have in our pencil cases. The children practiced asking and answering what they have, as well as including previous learning in their conversation.

Another great experience was the Gateshead Schools Music Workshop. It is always great fun. We practiced lots of music elements and some of our children got to go up to the front and play instruments too.

Friday 9th January

It has been a great start to the new year and Class Asia have come back ready to learn and enjoy their learning. A highlight this week was in art where the class learnt about tint and shade to develop 3-D art. The children learn how adding white creates tint and adding black creates shade.
