Emmaville Primary School

Asia Year 4

Welcome to the Asia Year 4 Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.

Thursday 18th December

What a lovely way to end the term! We have had lots of Christmas fun. Well done to Class Asia on a super first full term; they have been a great class to teach and we can’t want to see them again in the New Year. Merry Christmas and Happy New.

Friday 12th December

We have a had a great week of enrichment. It has been about Cultural Celebration. We have learnt what culture is, celebrated different cultures from around the world, including the diverse cultures of the children we have in class. One of the ways we did this was through food. The class cooked Moroccan vegetable tagine with ‘Tiny Tasters’. It was an excellent cultural experience, but not only that, the children learnt valuable cooking skills, nutritional awareness and were super working in pairs to create a delicious meal that they then took home and shared with their families.

As last week we didn’t have any yogo photos, we have also included some ones from this week where the class continued their skills development by exploring lots of new yoga poses, and again, working extremely well with partners.

 Well done Asia Class.

Friday 5th December

We have had a great week in Class Asia and all the children have worked super hard. There has been lots of great learning; here are a few of them. In PE we have had such a calming time developing our yoga skills, yoga poses and linking our movement to our breathing. In English, the children have practised the skills needed to write instructions and came up with great ideas for their upcoming innovated instructions. Computing challenged the class to use variables and conditional instructions to make a ‘Scratch’ maths quiz. Also, in PSHE, the children explored ‘first impressions’ and how they can change when we get to know someone.

Friday 28th November

It has been a great week in Class Asia.

A highlight of the week was our history learning. We were introduced to the Ancient Egyptians through an Ancient Egypt exhibition in our own classroom. The children explored the sources of historical evidence, making inferences about what they might be and what we they might learn from them about the Ancient Egyptians. The children loved being archeologists, and ultimately finding out what the artefacts really were, and what the items did actually tell us about the Ancient Egyptian civilisation.

Friday 18th November

It has been a really nice week is Class Asia.

One of the elements of learning this week was in dance. This week the children learnt the importance of relationships between the performer, and one relationship was ‘action and reaction’. Continuing the ‘Spy’ theme, the children adapted the routine to include their own spy ‘actions and reactions’ in time with the eight count. The class produced great routines and performed them at the end of the session.

Friday 14th November

It has been a lovely week with Class Asia. We have worked hard all week and had a great week of learning. We have learnt how to calculate perimeter in maths, started using variables in computer programming, explored Henry VIII and reformation in History, learnt different techniques for tone and texture in art, and started developing dance skills in PE based on the theme of 'Spying'.

It was also Children in Need day and the children brought in homemade cakes to sell, with the proceeds going to Children in Need. The cakes were amazing, we have lots of brilliant bakers, and it was a fun way to help others. Well done Emmaville and Class Asia!

Friday 7th November

November??! Where has the time gone? Well time does fly when you're having fun.  This week has certainly been packed full of interesting and fun activities, from developing 3-D shading skills in Art and learning all about sound in Science, to finding out about the importance of the Greenwich Meridian in Geography and honing our netball passing and throwing skills in PE.

On Friday, we listened to our new Guided Reading book, 'Wisp, a Story of Hope', without looking at any of the pictures.  It tells the tale of a young boy, Idris, who has only ever known the small, sad world of a refugee camp.  When he is visited by wisps that help the older people of the camp to remember the beauty of their old lives, Idris is found by a wisp that gives him hope for the future.  We then imagined and drew what we thought a wisp would look like, and all the amazing things it might show Idris he could enjoy in his life.  Our pictures ended up being wonderfully colourful and vibrant, with images of rainbows, castles, flowers and all sorts of things that we value in our own lives.  Here are some of them to bring you hope, too.
Friday 24th October

We had a visit from the Prayer Spaces team this week, which gave us a chance to spend a lovely time thinking about different aspects of our lives.  There were a variety of interesting activities and things to do, including making playdough into things that we are thankful for; fishing for rubber ducks with numbers on to consider events going on around the world; creating a rainbow of our hopes for this year; making raindrops with things we are finding it difficult to do; and spending a while in the cosy tent, just to relax and chill out.
Friday 17th October

Too many great things to write about here, so just room for a couple for this week in Asia Class, starting with our very first trumpet lesson.  Tuneful it was not, but noisy and fun it was!  Mrs B is our resident expert, so she spent the lesson taking us through the basics of our instruments, how to hold them and most importantly, how to use our lips on the mouthpiece to make that distinctive noise.  Please don't be too impatient when we're practising at home...!

The second set of photos shows some of the results of our hard work in Design and Technology;  in Science, we've been learning about electricity and how simple circuits work, so we used our knowledge to design and make our own Halloween torches.  It's not easy making a circuit and getting it all to fit inside a torch.

Friday 25th September

It has been a lovely week with Class Asia. One of the areas of learning has been column addition and subtraction. As part of this we used practical materials to highlight how an exchange works during column subtraction. The children have also been working hard on their losing tale in English. At the end of their write, they shared their stories with each other. During this, they took on board feedback and made improvements. Well done Asia – we are all mathematicians and writers.

Friday 19th September

We've had a super-busy week here in Asia Class, but the highlight has to be a visit from the Music Workshop team on Wednesday.  The subject for this session was 'Movie Night', so we were treated to some of the most famous sound-tracks, like the themes to Jurassic Park, Harry Potter and Star Wars.  Many of us were invited to the front to play along with various percussion instruments, or play matching games. We did have fun, although the photos seem to show some hard concentration while we were trying to keep to the beat!

We also had our School Council speeches and voting on Tuesday.  So many of us braved the nerves and stood in front of the class to give our speeches, but there can only be one boy and one girl to represent the class.  After the votes were counted, the new councillors for Asia Class are...

Jack E and Charlotte!

Congratulations to them both, but well done, too, to all those who put themselves forward for the job.

Friday 12th September

Another great week here in Asia Class saw us getting much more confident with column addition in Maths, story-mapping and role-playing a warning story in English, improving our ball-dribbling skills in PE, and exploring electricity and circuits in Science and DT.  We've also being squeezing in some French language practice, in preparation for our filmed lesson next week - how exciting!

Friday 5th September

What a brilliant week it has been on the start of our Year 4 journey!  We've been very busy, learning all about our 'home' continent Asia, writing poetry about our hopes for the coming year, painting pictures of magical and mysterious doorways to the future, and thinking about how we can be the best class team for each other.  During one PSHE lesson, we considered how we can make everyone in the class feel included and be part of the team, and the session ended with some of us recalling how others had made us feel welcome and supported in the past.  To hear such kind words said about each other made us feel very lucky to be part of such a supportive team.

Things did get a little competitive, though, when we worked in small groups to complete a bridge-building challenge.  We had a set budget to buy materials to bridge a 40cm gap, and the structure had to be strong enough to support the weight of a toy car.  We all went for the beam bridge design (we learnt about different types of bridge first), which were all successful, as you can see from the photos.
