Gateshead Reception

Welcome to the Gateshead Reception Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Week ending 11th July 2025

A busy week in Gateshead class this week!

With it being Enrichment week, we took part in various activities, linked to Geography and Art and looked at how we can look after the environment, as well as exploring nature around us.

During one activity, we used Google Earth to look at the Tyne Bridge. Then, we made our very own Tyne Bridge as a silhouette, using oil pastels for our bright, colourful background and black strips of paper for our bridge.

On Thursday, we went to Gibside for our end of year class trip. The children were fantastic at taking part in many of the activities, remaining sensible and respectful!
Week ending 27th June 2025

One of our Friday fun jobs this week was to look at the difference between healthy and unhealthy foods.

We first talked about why it is good to eat healthy foods and the impact this has on our bodies.

Then, we discussed foods that we would have in our packed lunches before designing our very own packed lunch bag!

Week ending 20th June 2025

What a fabulous Sport's Day we had! The children were resilient in all the activities and tried their very best. It was so lovely to hear the children cheer on their friends and see the day as a fun day, taking part even when they found some of the activities tricky. The children certainly enjoyed their grown ups taking part!

We ended our Sport's Day with some well deserved treats - ice lollies in the sunshine.

A fantastic effort from all of Gateshead class.
Week ending 13th June 2025

In maths this week, the children have recapped their knowledge on repeating patterns and have took part in many activities which explore different patterns.

One of our Friday fun jobs was to look at how objects have changed over time. We first started the lesson with talking about the difference between past and present, looking at various objects such as
phones, cameras, toys, and how these things have changed over time.

Then, we split into groups and looked at both old and new objects from a museum: dolls, watches, chalk boards, wooden trucks and many more! We talked about how many of these things have changed over time, and how some new objects were non existent many years ago!

Week ending 6th June 2025

During our first week back after the holidays, we have started a new story called, 'The story of pirate Tom'.

For one of our Friday fun job activities, we first listened to the story ‘A new home for a pirate’, talking about the comparisons from both stories, before making our very own pirate ships! They turned out great and it was clear that the children had thought about the pirate features from both stories.
Week ending 16th May 2025

We had such a great day on Friday for our Rainbow Fun Run!
Week ending 9th May 2025

For one of our Friday rotation activities, we looked at the artist Antony Gormley. We talked about what an artist is and looked at some of his work, specifically the Angel of the North.

We talked about how this is a type of sculpture and the materials needed to make this sculpture. We then applied this knowledge to create our very own picture of the Angel of the North, using oil pastels and water colours.

We also had a look at Google Earth and talked about how this can show us rivers, oceans, countries, towns etc…
Ryton was the town we looked at in particular and some of the children tried to find their homes!

Week ending 2nd May 2025

What a fantastic first week back we have had, Gateshead class!

We had the privilege of taking part in another music workshop. This time, with our teachers getting involved! Some of the children joined in with various pieces of percussion such as Boom-whackers, bells and drums.

In PE this week, we have been furthering our ball skills and have continued practising keeping our ball under control and trying some new tricks.

One of our Friday rotation activities was to draw to music. This involved exploring how different types of music can make us feel. We listened to some examples which were very different to each other. The children were very good at identifying how higher notes in a song could make us feel happy, excited, energetic. Whereas lower notes in songs could make us feel sad or even calm.

We then used this knowledge and listened to three pieces of music and drew to the music, using different colours, lines and shapes - the drawings all turned out amazing.
