Emmaville Primary School

Gateshead Reception

Welcome to the Gateshead Reception Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Week ending 4th April 2025

One of our Friday rotation activities this week was to explore symmetry and how we can see symmetry all around us.
We first talked about where we might see lines of symmetry, encouraging the children to point out objects in the classroom with symmetry.
Then, we showed a butterfly and explained that if we were to draw a line down the middle of the butterfly, both sides would be the same.
We applied this knowledge to create our very own colourful butterflies - the children were very good at recognising how we only needed to create patterns on one half of our butterfly.

Week ending 28th March 2025

In maths this week we have been looking at 'teen' numbers.
We have completed many activities which have enabled us to recognise that larger numbers are made up of full tens and part of the next ten.

Week ending 14th March 2025

Today one of our activities was to plant our own sunflower seed.

We started the session with listening to the story, 'Sam plants a sunflower'.

We then discussed the main parts of a plant and how it is very important that a plant is watered and has sunlight to grow.

We also discussed how our sunflower will not grow overnight and that we do need to be patient!
Week ending 7th March 2025

What a fantastic first week back after half-term. On Thursday, we celebrated world book day and took part in some fun activities - it was wonderful to see the children be so enthusiastic about the day. We read some books that the children brought in, learned about characters from books, created our own story settings and completed a treasure hunt outside in the sunshine!

Well done Gateshead, a great effort from everyone.
Week ending 7th February 2025

One of our Friday rotation activities this week was to listen to a story called, What Will I be? A story which encourages the children to use their imagination and think hard about if they could be anything, what would they be?
We had lots of ideas - dads, doctors, cats, vets, teachers, fairies, princesses, snakes, builders… They all had some wonderful ideas! We then used these ‘inventions’ as headbands, to ‘transform’ ourselves into whatever we had chosen!
Week ending 31st January 2025

This week, we have been learning about Lunar New Year. We learned how it is celebrated by many people across the world and watched some of the parades. To celebrate Lunar New Year, we tried some of the foods that are eaten during the celebration - prawn crackers, noodles and spring rolls. We also created our own dragon for the mini parade we will be doing next week!

Week ending 17th January 2025

One of our activities this week was to look at the meaning behind a New Year's Resolution. The children had some fantastic resolutions: swimming independently, riding a bike without stabilisers, being a kind friend...

The drawings that the children produced were very special and have made a great edition to our Calm Corner in reception.
Week ending 10th January 2025

This week, we have started our new class text, The Three Little Pigs.

At the beginning of the week, we sat in a circle and looked at a sack full of object - sticks, straw, bricks, three pigs and one wolf... The children were prompted with the question - What could our class story be about?

The children were fantastic at retelling the story with actions and have tried really hard during their first week back.

A brilliant effort from all of Gateshead class.
