Newcastle Reception

Welcome to the Newcastle Reception Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Week Ending Friday 8th May 2026

This week we spent some time investigating maps, looking at what maps were for and what they could represent. We talked about what a 'birds eye view' is.
The children loved looking at Google Maps, spotting features of the school and surrounding local area. Some children were able to spot their own streets in Crawcrook and Greenside.
The children then mapped out our classroom together and had a go at drawing a map of their bedroom.
We also looked at local landmarks, in particular The Angel of the North. The children produced some fabulous representations of their own; practising a pastel and colour wash process.
Week Ending Friday 1st May 2026

WILD after-school club

In our first week we read the book Stanley's Stick. This gave us some inspiration for what we could make out of what we could find in the forest. The children foraged for sticks and leaves and we used some additional materials to make wands, fishing rods, see-saws and cooking utensils. The children then enjoyed time to use the things they had made in their play.
Week Ending Friday 24th April 2026

Welcome back Newcastle class to our final term!

We started off with a busy week full of lots of outdoor learning, 'teen' numbers in maths, creating Supertato-style villains in English, celebrating Earth Day and exploring Life Cycles in Understanding of the World. The children used their existing knowledge of a caterpillar life cycle to apply this to a life cycle of a pumpkin.
