Welcome to the Northern Ireland Year 2 Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Week beginning 25th March 2024
What a super end to our Spring term!  We have had a great Enrichment Week looking at British Values and Protected Characteristics as well as lots of Easter fun too.
Here are some pictures of our decorated eggs - the children loved this activity and came up with some amazing ideas.  Congratulations to our winners - Ella 1st, Rosa 2nd and Alfie 3rd.  It must have been a very difficult choice for our judges.
Have a wonderful Easter break everyone and we'll see you after the holidays.
Love Mrs Johnson, Miss Freeman and Miss Rooney

Week beginning 18th March 2024
We had a very exciting start to our week with a wonderful workshop day all about family life.  It was a fun packed day where we talked about what a family is, looked at different families and drew our own family. Then we were introduced to a range of different families and enjoyed a 'Guess Who?' style quiz about them.  We also looked at the differences between needs and wants, how to keep money safe and then we designed our own money boxes. In the afternoon we looked at map reading and we also had to work together as a class to pretend to raise some spending money for an elderly couple in the community using a teddy bears picnic theme.
The day was a great success and a thoroughly enjoyable experience for the children - thank you to the lovely team who came to give us a very memorable day!
Week beginning 11th March 2024
For the past three weeks our PE focus has been 'Target Games'.  We have been learning how to send a bean bag or ball in different ways towards both stationary and moving targets, including rolling, underarm throwing, overarm throwing and kicking.  To finish off our topic we had a brilliant golf lesson with Craig from Close House on Wednesday.  The children put all of their newly learnt skills to the test and thoroughly enjoyed the session. A great end to our PE unit!
Week beginning 4th March 2024
Our World Book Day celebrations started early this week as we enjoyed a fantastic trip to Seven Stories on Tuesday.  In the morning we enjoyed a tour around the building looking at different genres of book, using a story map to create our own class story and looking at some original illustrations from a wide range of books.  We then enjoyed visiting the Judith Kerr exhibitions.  In 'The Tiger who came to Tea' exhibition we made tea in the role play kitchen, completed a quiz and met the life-size tiger from the story.  In the 'Mog' exhibition we looked at the huge array of Mog books and some original art work.  We then had our photograph taken with the real-life Mog!  After lunch we made our way up to the attic where we took part in a drama workshop.  We worked in groups to create our own stories using props.  Every few minutes we showed each group a freeze frame from our stories and explained which part of the story it was from.
It really was a fun packed day - the children were amazing throughout the trip and fully embraced their experience.
Week beginning 25th February 2024
Welcome back everyone - the children have had a super first week back.  They have settled straight back in and worked their socks off all week.  This week I would really like to celebrate our fantastic times tables work.  In year 2 we work on the 1, 2, 5 and 10 times tables and, this week, we have been busy practising our 5's.  The children have fully embraced this and particularly enjoyed singing along to this song:
You may enjoy a little sing along at home too!
Have a great weekend everyone.
Week beginning 12th February 2024
We have so much to celebrate as we reach the half way point of the school year. The children have worked so hard all term; making sure they listen well, work as a team and celebrate each other’s achievements. We really couldn’t ask for any more from the children. On Friday we finished our non chronological reports and I am absolutely blown away with the quality of work - so much amazing progress, it’s going to be so hard to choose a writer of the month next month.
I hope you all have a fabulous half term - you really deserve it! Well done Northern Ireland - I’m super proud!
Week beginning 5th February 2024
This week we have celebrated and explored Children's Mental Health Week.  We watched some lovely clips emphasising that our feelings fluctuate and it's okay to not feel okay.  Then we discussed what we could do if we were feeling angry, sad, nervous, anxious etc.  The children produced their own toolkit of what they could do and what makes them feel happy.  We really enjoyed the following clip if you'd like to watch it again at home with your grown up:

Week beginning 29th January 2024
On Friday the children were given the opportunity to read a story to the rest of the class.  We had so many volunteers which was a delight to see.  The children took turns to read one of our new picture books to their friends.  We were really impressed with both the children that chose to read and also the rest of the class for listening so well.  Those that chose to read showed great confidence and quickly got the hang of reading their part and showing the class the picture from their page.  Well done Team Northern Ireland!
Week beginning 22nd January 2024
We have been working so hard this week on our story innovations.  Our focus for the past three weeks has been the genre 'Rags to Riches'.  We learnt a model text then innovated this using our own ideas.  I would love to share one of our innovated stories with you, I'm sure you will agree that it is a wonderful piece of work.

In a far away land lived a poor girl called Louisi.  She wore a shabby coat and old shoes.  Louisi tried to find a friend.  She was sad and lonely and wished for a warm house.  One dark and starry night, Louisi spotted a frightening bear.  The bear snuck up next to her and Louisi was terrified!  Luckily, the bear was friendly so they became amazing friends and enjoyed chatting to each other.  Soon after, the bear asked Louisi if she would like him to make her a surprise.  Louisi agreed.  The kind bear made Louisi a lovely warm house.  Louisi was delighted.  She was so happy to have a home to live in and she never went cold again.
Week beginning 15th January 2024
We have had another busy and productive week packed with fun and learning! On Wednesday we all had a brilliant time at our music workshop.  We enjoyed listening to the band play a range of songs from different countries around the world.  Some of us even got a chance to join the band by playing musical instruments, finding the country on the globe, sharing facts from the countries or by having a little dance along to the music. It was a great morning and certainly put a spring in our step!
Week beginning 8th January 2024
Welcome back and a big Happy New Year to you all.  We have all had a brilliant first week back; sharing our holiday news, learning our new text in English, talking about our dreams and goals for 2024 and learning all about the Scottish Highlands.  We have also started our yoga unit in PE.  The children have enjoyed two yoga sessions so far which focus on a combination of storytelling, action songs, moves inspired by yoga and mindfulness.  It was lovely to see the children enjoy a calming and mindful session as well as developing their balance, control and posture.
Well done for working so hard on your first week back - have a super weekend!
