Crawcrook Nursery

Welcome to the Crawcrook Nursery Class Page.  Here, you can find out about everything that we've been doing this term.
Week ending Friday 12th July

This week has been our whole school 'Enrichment Week', themed around The Olympics and the Olympic values. We have learnt about past Olympics and the games involved. We then had a mini Olympics in the forest area.
The Nursery book focus was 'Sporting Heroes'. We enjoyed finding out about these sports people and talked about their determination and other Olympic values they have shown.
We made a stop off in Mexico in our food around the world session and used our chopping skills to make some Mexican quesadillas.
The week ended with a special visit from Lucy from the Baby Hub who did an exciting dance session with us using ribbon sticks, pom poms and light sticks.

Week Ending Friday 5th July 2024

This week in nursery we learned a lot about the lovely bees that we often see in our forest area.

We learned a new Talk For Writing story called The Sleepy Bumblebee and drew story maps to help remember and retell the story.
We also learned some new bee poems and rhymes - I have added a great video of The Zebra group's performance.

The children enjoyed learning more about what bees do and why they are so useful - we looked at how honey is made, including looking at what pollen is. We had a honey tasting session and a vote for our favourite type.

The younger children also made some fabulous bee paintings after looking closely at the book That's not my Bee!'.

Week ending 28th June 2024

This week we have learnt about the season, Summer. We have compared summer and winter clothes and talked about what we need to wear in summer to stay safe.
We learnt and performed a lovely poem called Summer Summer and tasted lots of different summer fruits.
On Friday, we enjoyed a forest activity- making summer breeze sticks using ribbon and sticks then ate the yummy ice lollies that we made earlier in the week.
Week Ending Friday 21st June 2024

Congratulations and a huge well done to all of nursery for a fabulous Sports Day this week. You were all amazing and we loved sharing the day with all of your grown-ups who came to watch.

This week in nursery we also had some special visitors...
On Monday nursery received a letter from the flower fairies. They had decided to move into our forest and we then spent the rest of the week being very busy: we have been making things for them, building them new houses, cooking them fairy cakes, writing and drawing them special messages in little notebooks, planting them new flowers and making them new magic wands.

Week ending 14th June 2024

This week, we have been learning and performing the 'Five Little Peas' poem. Everyone tried peas in pods during group time on Monday before hearing the poem. After learning about the pea life cycle, we planted some peas and are keeping a check on their growth.
We completed a fun forest activity rotation, playing Go Find It, making natural art with sticks and leaves and listening to a forest story under the trees.

Week Ending Friday 7th June 2024

A week filled with many new things...the children have embraced all of the activities this week, including visits to their new classroom spaces in Reception and practicing for Sports Day on the big school field.

We have also been investigating where we live, looking at maps and different types of houses.

We have read the story The Three Little Pigs and have used props and puppets to retell the story.

The children were also excellent at designing and building houses for different story characters. They built tiny homes for the fairies and big castles for the Giants.
Week Ending Friday 17th May 2024

This week, we received a very special delivery of an incubator of chick eggs.
The children were so excited and were amazed on Tuesday morning to see that two of the chicks had hatched overnight.
We watched on as the rest of the eggs hatched over the next two days. The children have spent the last couple of days looking after the chicks, feeding them, watching them, and giving them lots of cuddles. We can't wait to see how much they have grown by Monday!
Week ending Friday 10th May

Nursery had an amazing day at Hall Hill Farm this week and we were very lucky with the lovely sunny weather. They held chicks, guinea pigs and rabbits and saw pigs, highland cows and alpacas. They fed goats, bottle fed lambs and we even had a go at milking a cow (not a real one though!)
One of our favourite parts of the day was the tractor ride. It was very bumpy!
All the children were absolute superstars and the farm staff commented on how well they listened.
Week Ending Friday 3rd May 2024

This week in nursery we have been getting ready for our trip to Hall Hill Farm next week.

We have been reading lots of farm themed books to find out about the animals that we might see whilst we are there.
We have also investigated where milk comes from and the children learned how to safely chop up fruit to make some delicious milkshakes.
We have also played some fun movement games outside, thinking of ways to move like different animals and completing the movements on 'stop / go' commands.
Dingle Dangle Scarecrow was one of the children's favourite actions rhymes this week.

Week Ending Friday 26th April 2024

We have had a lovely week learning about the life cycle of a frog.
We began the week learning The Little Frog poem and practising this with actions. Then we looked at some real tadpoles with our magnifying glasses. We have ordered the lifecycle of a frog and know that a frog grows from frog spawn.
We have loved singing 5 Little Spackled Frogs and practised counting and subtracting using cubes whilst singing the song.
Week Ending Friday 19th April 2024

Welcome back Nursery and welcome to the summer term.
We have had a good week, settling back in after the holidays with lots of outdoor play with our friends.
The children were also excited to see our new nursery recruits...not new children...five baby caterpillars that we are going to observe and look after.
The children learned about the life cycle of caterpillars, used The Very Hungry Caterpillar story to practice talking about and sequencing a story, made caterpillars by threading bobbins to practice fine motor skills, and maths skills to subitise and count dice patterns to make playdough caterpillars.
Our two-year-old children have also been demonstrating their ever-increasing love of books by independently looking at their favourite books in our Rainbow Room. The videos that Miss James managed to capture of them talking about their books are just lovely!
